JOAN VIDAL - BEST CATALAN COMPOSER 2012 BY THE AMJM

Nominated for best composer, group and album of the year by the Deptford Suite project, Joan Vidal received yesterday the award for "Composer of the Year" by the Catalan Association of Jazz and Modern Music (AMJM). Based on Robertson Davies' literary trilogy, Deptford Suite (2012) is a piece which combines jazz, free and contemporary music. The suite was premiered in London and has been performed at the Festival de Jazz de Granollers, Barcelona and Andorra and the Tete Montoliu Memorial Festival in Barcelona. The composition and performance of this suite by Joan Vidal Sextet impressed the director of the Montreal Jazz Festival, who was sent to Barcelona to attend the Mercè festivity.

ILLUSIONARY RHYTHMS IN THE RECORDING STUDIO

After presenting the new project at the 37th Cicle de Jazz al Casino de Granollers, Joan Vidal Sextet record their second album: Illusionary Rhythms. The CD will be edited by JazzGranollers Records thanks to a Catalan Government grant given to Joan Vidal in 2012. The album is a recreation of György Ligeti's creative universe from the jazz and improvised music perspective.

HOQUETUS BY JOAN VIDAL PREMIERED SUCCESSFULLY AT THE SHOW “V-E-U-S”

Joan Vidal presented the work HOQUETUS at the new show by Cor Infantil Amics de la Unió (Amics de la Unió Children’s Choir) V-E-U-S. The work, commissioned by the choir, is a composition for children’s treble voices a capella which explores the different sonorities of the choir and at times, turn it into a percussion instrument.

The show, whose premiere was a great success both with the critics and the audience at the Theatre Ponent in Granollers, will be on for the next few months in La Roca del Vallès, Cervera and Corçà (Girona).

ARRANGEMENTS BY JOAN VIDAL FOR THE NEW DISC OF EL COR INFANTIL AMICS DE LA UNIÓ (ED. LA MÀ DE GUIDO)

Joan Vidal arranges the work A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten and Dancing Day by John Rutter as a commission by the Cor Infantil Amics de la Unió. Joan Vidal has added to the original versions for children choir and harp, two papers for percussion that do not try to break with the original works, but revision of these compositions in modern times.

The Cor Infantil Amics de la Unió, one of the best treble voice choirs in the country, has recorded these arrangements on a disc brought out by La Mà de Guido that has just come out on the market. The disc will be premiered in Granollers in December and can be purchased online at http://www.lamadeguido.com and at the principal music stores in Catalonia and Spain
